Photosynthesis, explained so it sticks
Photosynthesis is the trick that keeps nearly everything on Earth fed: plants take light, water and carbon dioxide, and turn them into sugar and oxygen. You learned that sentence in school. The reason it never stuck is that it arrived as a paragraph instead of as questions.
Here is the shape of it. Sunlight lands on chlorophyll, the green pigment packed inside chloroplasts. The light-dependent reactions use that energy to split water, releasing oxygen as a by-product (that is the oxygen you are breathing now) and charging up energy carriers. Then the Calvin cycle spends those carriers to stitch carbon dioxide into glucose, the sugar the plant actually eats. Water comes up from the roots, carbon dioxide slips in through pores called stomata, and the whole factory runs on daylight.
